Dame Ellen MacArthur was born in Derbyshire but has made Cowes her home. This picture was taken on Cowes Parade following sailing her catarmaran Kingfisher II from Falmouth February 2005. Having just made history as the youngest & first woman to sail single handed non-stop round the world. She has set up the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in cowes.
Who ever sent this lived in Cowes describing it as “Paradise”.

Sadly it was decided for economic reasons to retire Britannia; she is now a museum ship docked in Leith, Edinburgh.
Sir Max Aitken 1910-1985 Sir Max has been acknowledged by his achievements as the newspaper magnate, a fighter pilot in WWII, a Conservative MP, a racing yachtsman, a powerboat pioneer and the London Boat Show founder. His Cowes home The Prospect is now the Max Aitken Museum.
HMY Britannia Launched 1893 scuttled 1936. H M George V’s much loved yacht was a regular visitor to Cowes.
Cowes world reputation for sail making was due in no small measure to Ratsey & Lapthorns.
