Who We Are

The Cowes Heritage and Community Group (CHCG) is the result of a merger (which was enacted in 2020) between the voluntary group Cowes Heritage and the registered charity, the Cowes Voluntary Community Group, with premises at the Beckford Centre, 5 Beckford Road, Cowes, Isle of Wight PO31 7SE. CHCG’s Objectives are:

To advance the education of the public in Cowes and the surrounding area by:

(1)    the provision of classes in the arts, crafts, local history and social history; and

(2)    the provision of public exhibitions and presentations in the heritage of Cowes.

The Cowes Voluntary Community Group was formed in 1995 and has occupied the Beckford Centre from its inception – whilst Cowes Heritage was formed eight years later in 2003.

Until the merger Cowes Heritage did not have a town centre home – it operated out of a portacabin on an industrial site at Somerton on the outskirts of Cowes.

A free booklet, A History of the Beckford Centre, has been produced chronicling the Beckford Centre’s life from the time the land was purchased in 1888 (for £41) to the year 2020. This is available from the Beckford Centre or by request to [email protected]
